Last week’s sermon focused on the fact that our God is generous.

We learned from the Parable of the Generous Landowner in Matthew 20, that the God that Jesus reveals, the God that Jesus knows, the God that Jesus loves, runs counter to the way we are wired to think. We think that in our world, we earn what we get but the God Jesus knows is utterly generous. Generous beyond what we could even imagine.

This generosity is expressed in the gracious actions of God in the creation of the world. The intricate and beautiful ways in which He created things points to His generosity. The way that He provides for His creation points to His generosity. Ultimately, His generosity is seen in the gift of Jesus to our world and allowing Him to be sacrificed on a cross for our wrongs. We experience forgiveness because of God’s generosity.

Our response to this generosity is important. We as followers of Christ need to be a people who are known for our generosity. It is seen in the way that we treat those we love. It is seen in the way that we treat a stranger. It is seen as we give of our time and it is seen as we give of our treasure. We are generous in our abundance and we are generous as we are moved with compassion.

May we be a people who are known for our generosity. We are generous because we know and love a God who is generous beyond what we could imagine.

So do you trust God?

It is a hard question to answer. When things are going well, my answer is an easy and definite yes! When things are difficult, I hesitate and wonder. I wonder if God is really listening to my prayers.

In last week’s sermon we learned that the God that Jesus knows and loves is trustworthy. Even in the darkest moments, when death has taken place, the God that Jesus loves provides and as Jesus said, “it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (John 11:4). 

God may not answer in the manner that we think that He should, but He is trustworthy and He will provide and He will be glorified. It is all a part of the package of trusting Him.

I hope that you can come this Sunday as we learn about another important characteristic of the God that Jesus knows and loves.

And don’t forget to attend the Soup Supper and Tim Talk this Sunday, October 10 at 4pm. Come and enjoy a potluck soup or a chili dish (along with chips, bread and drinks) and I will be sharing about my past year of serving at LCPC and what is in store for the coming year. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions. Sign-ups will take place on the patio or you can call the church office to let us know that you will be attending.

I hope that you were able to come to the “Back to Church BBQ” that took place last weekend at LCPC. The weather cooperated (the temperature was just right) and a lot of people put some great effort into making it a fun evening. It was a good time with around 100 people in attendance and I hope that you were one of the many that won some great prizes. The purpose of the evening was to welcome people “back to church” and for me (as the new guy around here) to meet some people that I haven’t met or haven’t seen around church for a while. I did get to meet many people, some who were connected to the church and others who were coming to the church for the first time. Be praying that we will continue to engage with more and more people in our community and that our encounters will point them to Jesus.

My hope is that we will continue to have these types of events on a regular basis so that there are ways that you can easily invite a friend or a neighbor to connect with our church and with Jesus.
